The Roots

So this is where it all began for me, when I moved into our cottage it became apparent that the apple indeed does not fall for from the tree.

Ten years ago myself and Geoff moved into my father's family home, a very old cottage parts of which are over 200 years old.  Although we knew that granny had been quite the hoarder and here styling flamboyant to say the least, we were still amused when we started to peel back the layers and were met with neon green on the walls, psychedelic wallpaper and countless messages, dates and stories wrote on everything from walls to the back of matchboxes.

The 1st job was to get a blank canvas again so I went for white walls everywhere.  This was as radical a move at the time as it was to move in and not demolish the property altogether.  We were coming to the end of the boom and everywhere our friends were putting up big new builds, it took quite a few years before our cosy little cottage and its low running costs became the subject of envy rather than scorn.

Living here has made me a problem solver and a creative thinker.  There's neither a straight wall nor a level floor so I feel free to go for it in the design and styling, nothing has to be too perfect, in fact its usually better if its not.

Today I live here with my husband Geoff and my two boys Oscar 3 and Alexander 10 months.  Life is so busy and as I've decided to stay predominantly at home until the boys are at school styling on a budget is a necessity.  I still crave the latest style and a £5k sofa but for now my family, imagination, the autions and my granny's hoard will keep me quite content, and as they say necessity is the mother of invention.
