3 romantic gestures that'll move the earth instead of costing it.

Updated: Feb 18, 2019

The promise

We all feel the pressure these days to at least appear to be romantic. Social media inundates us with images of the perfect couples, the ultimate romantic getaways, fine dining and expensive gifts. But what if you just can't afford the hype and those garage bought flowers just wont cut it this time? Surely it's the thought that counts right? Wrong, the effort is what counts and with a bit of help from me I foresee some seismic activity!

1. The romantic meal at home

Outdoors or indoors with a little effort and preparation your date will be seriously impressed with your thrift skills! Perfect for those with little ones when leaving the house just isn't an option.

What you'll need...

1. Candles and fairy light by the truck load!

2. A long piece of material or a scarf can make an excellent table runner.

3. Your best cutlery and tableware.

4. Some foraged branches, leaves or flowers for a centerpiece.

5. Decorative napkins and some hessian or twine.

6. If you're not feeling confident stick to a colour pallet of no more than three complementary shades.

7. Plenty of throws and cushions if your going to brave it outdoors, for extra brownie points a fire pit will take it to the next level.

8. Food, not my area of expertise but I reckon after all that effort your lack of culinary skills would be forgiven!

9. Select a romantic playlist.

10. Finally, get your table set up before you start preparing your meal and don't forget the wine...

To go the extra mile step outside your comfort zone, dust off those Jamie Oliver books and cook up a storm!

2. Spa night

This my look like an extravagant night in but with the growing number of hot tub hire companies springing up this piece of luxury it is very much within reach. Most companies hire out the hot tubs and gazebos for the weekend and for a little as £90. You can feel like your on a romantic spa getaway in the comfort of your own back yard.

What you'll need...

1. Source a reputable hire company and check reviews.

2. The company will set up a basic gazebo and may provide lighting but why stop there?

3. As with the romantic evening meal, get the candles, throws and fairy lights out!

4. Leave towels, slippers and dressing gowns nearby.

5. Champagne, music, speedos, bikinis and your set!

To go the extra mile add face masks, massage oil and fluffy robes

The natural location

This one is all about the location so do your research and you'll find a wealth of beauty spots to choose from. Forest parks, beaches, lakeside retreats, mountain ranges, hiking spots or somewhere close to your heart are perfect places to start looking. After that keep it simple and pack smart, think about how you'll get there and how much you'll need to carry, nothing will kill the mood quicker than you both being a hot mess by the time you get there.

What you'll need...

1. Pack a picnic or bring a bbq but keep it simple.

2. Bring blankets and maybe a few tea lights for extra ambiance.

3. Portable bluetooth speakers and a playlist or just enjoy the sounds of nature.

4. Lighters and kindling for a fire.

5. A knowledge of the area is a must and an awareness of the rules and regulations. Keep green and bring your litter home!

To go the extra mile put together a spread made from locally sourced produce.

So there you have it, hopefully I've given you cash strapped folks like myself a few ideas for that next birthday, anniversary or just to simply say I love you. Feel free to comment can ask question!

To go the extra, extra mile... bring loo roll

Lots of love
